Telehealth psychiatry has changed the way Texans access mental health care. Whether you live in a major city like Dallas or a smaller community like Forney, Crandall, or anywhere in Kaufman County, you can now connect with a board-certified psychiatric provider from your home, your car, or your office — no commute required.
If you have never tried telehealth before, it is completely normal to have questions. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect so you can approach your first appointment with confidence.
What Is Telehealth Psychiatry?
Telehealth psychiatry delivers the same level of psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management as an in-person clinic visit — through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Your provider can see and hear you clearly, review your history, and discuss your concerns in real time.
In Texas, telehealth services are governed by state law and must meet the same standards as in-person care. At Heartland Psychiatry and Wellness, we use encrypted video technology to ensure your session is private and confidential.
What Conditions Can Be Treated via Telehealth?
We treat a wide range of mental health conditions via telehealth, including:
- Depression and persistent depressive disorder
- Generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder
- ADHD and attention disorders in adults
- Bipolar disorder (Types I and II)
- PTSD and trauma-related disorders
- OCD and related conditions
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances related to mental health
Before Your First Appointment
A few days before your visit, you will receive a confirmation and a link to complete intake paperwork online. This typically includes your medical and psychiatric history, current medications, and insurance information.
To prepare for a smooth session, make sure your device (phone, tablet, or computer) has a working camera and microphone. Find a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted. Good lighting and a stable internet connection make a big difference.
What Happens During the Evaluation?
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Your provider — either Chime Ajiere, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, or Queen Ajiere, APRN, PMHNP-BC — will spend time getting to know you as a whole person, not just a list of symptoms.
You can expect to discuss your current concerns, your personal and family mental health history, any past treatments or medications, your sleep, energy, mood, and daily functioning, as well as your goals for care.
There is no judgment. Our providers are trained to create a space where you feel heard and respected.
Will I Receive a Prescription at My First Visit?
Not always — and that is intentional. A thoughtful evaluation takes time. In some cases, your provider may recommend starting medication at the first visit. In others, they may want to gather more information before prescribing.
If medication is appropriate, we follow evidence-based prescribing practices and explain every option clearly, including expected benefits, potential side effects, and alternatives. You are always part of the decision.
Follow-Up Appointments and Ongoing Care
After your initial evaluation, follow-up appointments are typically scheduled every four to eight weeks, depending on your treatment plan. These visits focus on monitoring your progress, adjusting medications if needed, and checking in on your overall well-being.
Because we are telehealth-only, there is no waiting room and no commute. You can attend follow-ups from wherever you are in Texas.
